Document Summary
Bee swarms honey bees fly together in a group. Murmuration: group of starlings engaging in the same decision is called a murmer, also show in humans crowd behaviour. Each individual has different and incomplete information, yet there is group cohesion. Quorum number of people needed to make a decision. So individual choice is irrelevant it is just the decision of the quorum that allows for choices. No need for a leader, but leadership can happen. Cognitive neuroscience: the behaviour of ants mimics neural networks. Individuals are in a resting state unless activated by nearby individuals and once a threshold is reached the ant become active: activation spreads to nearby ants, there is a period of inactivity following synchronous activity. Bees: when entire colony of bees needs to find a new hive, they need to make a decision for what location is best, scout bees are recruited and go out and look for a new area.
