Aspects of complex social group: dominance, kinship, sex individuals communicate differently to individuals based on their sex, experience. Redirected aggression: baboons or vervet monkeys will direct aggression towards individuals related to a conspecific that was aggressive towards them. Vervet monkeys live in large social groups where the matrilineal (mother) relationships determine rank and social structure: males disperse at maturity, so the stable kin relations are through females, social rank determined by matrilineal. Members recognize their own kin-demonstrated through grooming and they also benefit from recognition of 3rd party relationships. Monkeys engaging in grooming interactions suggest vervet monkeys are aware of locations of individuals in group hierarchy.
