Document Summary

Lecture 18 social competence & prosocial behaviour. Large group living does not necessarily mean that complex social interactions occur. Aspects of complex social group: dominance, kinship, sex individuals communicate differently to individuals based on their sex, experience. Redirected aggression: baboons or vervet monkeys will direct aggression towards individuals related to a conspecific that was aggressive towards them. Vervet monkeys live in large social groups where the matrilineal (mother) relationships determine rank and social structure: males disperse at maturity, so the stable kin relations are through females, social rank determined by matrilineal. Members recognize their own kin-demonstrated through grooming and they also benefit from recognition of 3rd party relationships. Monkeys engaging in grooming interactions suggest vervet monkeys are aware of locations of individuals in group hierarchy. Inclusive fitness = (cid:1856)(cid:1870)(cid:1857)(cid:1855)(cid:1872) (cid:1858)(cid:1872)(cid:1857)(cid:1871)(cid:1871)+(cid:1856)(cid:1870)(cid:1857)(cid:1855)(cid:1872) (cid:1858)(cid:1872)(cid:1857)(cid:1871)(cid:1871) (genes passed on through kin) Indirect fitness is the number of offspring equivalents an individual rears, rescues or otherwise supports through its behavior (regardless of who begets them).
