Psychology 2220A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Commissurotomy, Dichotic Listening Test, Prefrontal Cortex
Document Summary
Chapter 16: lateralization, language and the split brain. There are major differences between the functions of the left and right cerebral hemispheres. Cerebral commissures (places where two things are joined) connect the two hemispheres of the brain (corpus callosum) Studies of split-brain patients have been instrumental in developing our understanding of what happens when these connections are severed. The corpus callosum is really important because it allows the left and right hemisphere to share information. Discovery of the specific functions of the left hemisphere: This discovery was made by damage to the left hemisphere, resulting in aphasia and apraxia. Aphasia: a deficit in language comprehension and function due to brain damage, usually as a result of damage to the left hemisphere. Apraxia: difficulty performing movements when asked to do so out of context. It is also a consequence of damage to the left hemisphere.
