Document Summary
Freudian approach: goal of psychotherapy is to: help the person to reveal unconscious motives, conflicts and other dynamics, to uncover disguises and defenses and to read the symbolic meanings of behaviours. Beneath them are underlying mechanisms that drive the person consistently over the years. Relying on the clincian: the rules for relating behavioural signs to unconscious meanings (assessment) are not spelled out and require clinicans to form their own judgements based on clinical experience. Projective methods involve an ambiguous task with a disguised purpose, giving the participants freedom to respond. Goal is that the unconscious inner life is at least partially projected and revealed. Rorschach and tat are the most common used personality assessments but the evidence for their validity and utility remains dubious. Series of inkblots on 10 separate cards, some black and some white, some coloured. The individual is instructed to look at the inkblots one at a time and to say everything that the inkblot could resemble.
