Prologue: case of kitty genovese (and 28 bystanders are unresponsive) Answer: latane and darley"s analysis: was the murder a result of dehumanization that occurs in big cities? (no) Both thought something more than dehumanization was occurring. Shocking that 38 people did nothing and witnessed the crime. Had a hunch that no one helped because there were too many bystanders. Probably a number of factors in immediate situation that prevented the bystanders from helping: situational factors: too many bystanders (each one knew that many other people were watching and that is why they did nothing)! Researchers wanted to stage an emergency that would be witnessed by single bystanders or group of bystanders and conduct an experiment. Male uni students discuss personal problems adjusting to life at a large university (in 2 3 or 6 people groups) During the study people would hear another participant having a seizure. He was the only bystanders (2 person group)
