Psychology 3720F/G Lecture 10: Aggression Final Lecture.docx
Document Summary
Exposure to aversive stimulus (any stimulus we prefer to avoid), causes negative affect. Negative affect leads to the instigation to escape (ready to flee from source of negative affect) Negative affect also leads to the instigation to aggress. Both of these instigations (fight, flee, aggress, escape) involve a set of responses that are linked together and associated in a network. These associations are automatically activated when we experience negative affect. Four basic types of automatic associations: body reactions (expressive motor reaction), Model predicts if one of the associations are activated then other associations in the network are automatically activated. Ex: body reactions is clenched fists, leads to negative thoughts, leads to experiencing anger, remember past memories. Instigation to aggress and instigation to escape are followed by higher-order cognitive processing \ Higher order cognitive processing leads to either aggressive behavior or escape behavior. Weapons and knives; also see klinesmith reading (interacted with the toy gun increased aggression)
