Document Summary

Synaesthesia mixing of the senses , rare disorder where sensations may accompany other sensations (sight with sounds, taste with touch, etc. ) *see fig 5. 1 on p. 170 and understand it* Sensation the process where our sense organs receive stimuli from environment and sends to brain elec. Perception the process of organizing sensations and piecing them together to understand what they tell us. Brain cannot interpret the environment without the aid of specialized cells that translate. More than 5 senses: vision, audition, touch, gestation (taste), olfaction (smell) + balance, environmental stimuli into nerve impulses. pain (touch), immune system senses, etc. Absolute threshold: lowest intensity a stimulus can be detected 50% of the time. You hear sounds after watching a scary movie because you"re straining to hear. Argues against a fixed absolute threshold detection thresholds can fluctuate. Signal detection theory is more focuses on factors that influence sensory judgements. More rewards for hits in detection means people will be bolder, lower detection threshold.
