Gender is one of the first things, we notice about others, something we commit to maintaining on a daily basis. Sexism is deeply entrenched and take for granted. Greater awareness of how gender is socially constructive can help us better choices. Sex: depends on whether a person was born with distinct male or female genitals and a genetic program that released either male or female hormones to stimulate the development of the reproductive system. Gender: the feelings, attitudes, desires and behaviours that are associated with a particular sexual category. What about those individuals who don"t fit nearly into the male and female sexes. We are deeply committed to the notion of 2 sexes. Intersex: general term used for a variety of conditions where a person is born with a reproductive/ sexual anatomy that doesn"t seem to fit the typical definitions of female/male. Doctors usually correct this condition at birth - 90% of the time the infant is identified as female.
