Sociology 1025A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Hidden Curriculum, Occupational Segregation, Job Performance
Document Summary
Lecture 8 sex, gender and sexualities: deconstructing dualisms. A discourse has a power dynamic to it. One element often has more power over others in regards to influence. Looks at gender as a spectrum as opposed to a dualism. Gender is cultural and is created; we are taught gender through our interactions. Dualism is a social construction and seems natural. When people do not fit into a box, they are put into a box (ex. Assigning intersexed babies with a gender at birth, as opposed to later in life) Gender is not the same in all places. There is a social construction aspect to how we do gender. Males experience more depression with job loss due to the identification with the male identity and the role of being the breadwinner. We train girls to be house goddesses . Example: toys sold to girls reinforce this with cleaning products and toy dolls. Men are expected to be manly and tough .
