The process of selecting a subset of cases in order to draw conclusions about the entire set. Time consuming and costly to study every single person- take a sample to represent population generalization quantitative research external validity. The population to which researchers would like to generalize their results. The entity about whom or which the researcher gathers info. An operational definition of the population that provides the basis for drawing a sample. A list of cases from which a sample may be selected. Sampling frame is not the same thing as a sample. A mismatch between the target population and sampling frame. Phone book example some people aren"t in the phone book. Is the deviation of the selected sample from the true characteristics, traits, behaviours, qualities or figures of the entire population parameters characteristics of a population statistics estimates of population parameters. Info from the sample is linked to the population via the sampling distribution.
