It is natural for humans to be self-oriented: conflict is inevitable, conflict is good and it promotes change, family can"t have open conflict, always trying to work things out, everyone needs access to power of some kind. Legitimate authority: men usually have more power, makes more money, parents have more control, man have more control of major decisions in making the family. Financial: highest earner which is usually the mole cant veto decisions. Physical: hitting someone to make someone listen, spanking children, abusing children. Love: making someone do something and using love as the source of power. Criticisms: fails to demonstrate how families contribute to society, doesn"t explain why norms & values for families change slowly.
