It can be between birth parents and relaives, birth parents and people they don"t know, or a transfer between the state to the adopive parents (if they are foster children or wards of the state) Children"s aid socieies are local, which can lead to people being unfamiliar with the pracices and laws (they can vary widely) There have been changes in aitudes towards orphans and abandoned children throughout history (and when aitudes change, laws will begin to change) In ancient rome, it was common for abandoned children to become slaves. Around the 19th century, it was believed that living your whole life in an orphanage was less than ideal and children were adopted into families (but once adopted, were oten put to work) 1970: peak of adopion rates in north america due to a combinaion of factors. Diferent lifestyles connected to the sexual revoluion. Less of a sigma with being an unwed mother or being pregnant before marriage.
