Document Summary

Female offenders present a unique challenge for systems of corrections. The pathways of crime are different for women. Women offenders are distinct from male offenders, and as a result we need to rely on gender-specific programs and interventions. Let"s first look at a profile of female offenders: One in 10 in custody in canada are women. Number admitted has increased 40% in the past decade for those women who have been admitted into federal custody: 90% increase in aboriginal women sentenced to correctional facilities. More and more are being admitted to custody for violent crimes. More women are being incarcerated on drug related charges. Hiv, hep c, are generally higher among female inmates. Women are twice more likely than men to have been previously hospitalized, for psychiatric reasons, and are twice as likely to have mental health issues. A lot of the psychiatric and mental health issues are due to women encountering sexual abuse or harassment prior to their incarceration.
