Once we collected using either sampling or experiments, we like to use these data to draw conclusions about the population from which we have obtained the information. We move from the eld of descriptive statistics and start venturing the most important branch of statistics: inferential statistics. We draw conclusions about the population using sample data and inference methodologies, we cannot be certain that our conclusions are correct. Probability theory helps us understand and analyze uncertainty, enabling us to draw meaningful inference about the population. Probability theory is a vehicle which looks at the sample information and answers questions like what are the chances that this sample is drawn from a particular population? . Probability theory provides a way to quantify uncertainty. We can use it to consider the sample in light of the likelihood of these results under a probability model to make inferences about the unknown population characteristics.
