Statistical Sciences 2037A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Conditional Probability, Fair Coin
Document Summary
P(x)=0 probability that x occurs is equal to zero so wont happen. 0 as a probability is a certainty e. g. rolling a 7 on a 6 sided die. P(x)=1 is also a certain/a guaranteed outcome. If you know probability of one of them, can figure out the probability of the other. Example: a loaded coin lands on heads 4 times out of 10. H and t are compliments of each other. Mutually exclusive and disjoint mean the same thing- cant happen at the same time. P(x or y) = p(x) + p(y) graph: Probability histogram that describes the outcomes of rolling 2 dice. 7 has the highest probability because theres many ways/combinations that add up to 7. Can add up their probabilities on the histogram because they"re mutually exclusive. Can add up the probabilities of all numbers up to and including 9. Or can subtract 10, 11, and 12 probabilities from 1 (use the compliment rule)
