Normative developmental tasks in young & middle adulthood are: young adults: to achieve intimacy versus the danger of isolation: successful resolution of this task results in the virtue of love. Middle adults: to maintain generativity vs the danger of stagnation or self-absorption: successful resolution of this task results in the virtue of production & care. 5 leading causes of death among young & middle adults: Accidents were by far the leading cause of death. The relative significance of the leading causes of death shifts from human-induced deaths during 25-34 yrs old to deaths from degenerative diseases during the 35-44 yrs old. Throughout early and middle adulthood: accidental deaths other than those involving motor vehicles became increasingly more significant as causes of death. Attitudes toward death among young & middle adults: A more stable self-understanding (vs. adolescents) tends to diminish anxiety about one"s own death. However, changing encounters with death influence general patterns of death-related attitudes.
