It has always existed, but looking at trends coming up from the street is a phenomenon of the 20th century: emphasizes individualism rather than focusing on fashion trends ie. what people do with fashion in their everyday lives. It is on the street that people can demonstrate their multiple, negotiated identities : they use pieces of clothing they already have while mixing with newer current trends, street style is a performance. It creates a space where identities can be explored through the act of dressing: originally, street style was a subcultural style. It used to be so recognizable as a fashion style that there was a v&a exhibition in the 1990s: while some aspects of fashion change rapidly, others do not.
