Women's Studies 2164A Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Forever 21, Fast Fashion, Consumerism
Document Summary
Lecture 4: fashion and sustainability/secondhand clothing/fast fashion and slow fashion. Announcements: make sure you watch the true cost of fashion before the midterm, next week we will talk about the midterm and some sample questions. 4 subsystems in the fashion chain: creative, the role of the designer, manufacturing, how clothes get made, managerial, those who decide how much stock goes to barneys, sears, etc, communication, advertising, publicity. In the 1950s most of our clothing was still made in america. Fast fashion: fast fashion means that there are no longer 2 seasons a year, retailers often have new clothes out every week (it is more like 50) If there were no garment factories, there would be no work at all (even though they pay terribly, it is critical to warding off poverty) Each brand gets a grade based on how the workers are treated: policies, traceability and transparency, auditing and supplier relationships, and worker empowerment.
