Lecture 21 - literary responses: literatures as resistance. A writer in the uk, when many women struggled to gain access to education and economic independence. Based on two lectures; initially delivered to female students. Warns about the position that those women were in. They were free from restrictions that held previous generations back and found themselves w/o a blueprint in regards to their professional lives. They were the first and did not have role models to look up to. Not everyone was happy that women were enrolled in university. Women"s stories are largely missing from history; they were prevented from following more daring pathways if they had a more receptive audience or role models. Unrecorded and unlived personal histories were lost, she tries to reinvent this through imagination and speculation. Writing is difficult for men who are great at it as well.
