Hegemonic = ruling or dominant in a political or social context. Concept that all men receive a patriarchal dividend: receive benefits because they are born male. The idea of a (cid:858)real (cid:373)a(cid:374)(cid:859) i(cid:374) a gi(cid:448)e(cid:374) ti(cid:373)e a(cid:374)d pla(cid:272)e: has power, met with social approval, changes between time and place. In the 20th century, the figure of john wayne is regarded as the real man: stoic, not emotional, not vulnerable. Over time, theorists argue that there has been a ratcheting up of what the real man is: accepting of more violence in the media, accepting of more violent porn, getting more and more hegemonic. Men are not only organized hierarchically in relation to women but also with and to each other: hierarchy of masculinities. Why do men (attempt to) subscribe to these ideals: want to be positively evaluated by other men, masculinity is homosocial performed for, and judged by, other men.
