Hegemonic masculinity; ruling or dominant in a political or social context. A "real man" in a given time and place. Real man has power, usually met with social approval. The real man changes through time and space. Clint eastwood is regarded as the real man decades ago, stoic reserved sturdy, no talk of emotions. These qualities can exist in a real man today. A real man today has become more aggressive over time. Mens bodies have grown bigger over time (action figures, wrestlers) Amplification of the real man, physically getting larger. These ideas of violence are our cultural ideas of what a real man is. Men are organized hierarchically in accordance to women, also to other men. Acknowledging that there are multiple masculinities, and there is a totem pole of masculinities. Most (cid:271)oys a(cid:374)d (cid:373)e(cid:374) do(cid:374)"t a(cid:272)tually fit the spa(cid:272)e of the real (cid:373)a(cid:374) Most men fail at being a real man. It is not normal, but it is normative.
