Challenging stereotypes in 50s like rosie the rivetor. Frederic wertham: saw all comics producing an inclination of homosexuality in childrenww as lesbian & batman and robin as homosexual. Paradise island is open to being seen as lesbian relationships. Feminism: became an organized mvmt in 19th century, although it was prevalent before. Feminism was assoc w other social reform mvmts, incl abolition of slavery, prison reform, education reform, child labour laws. Fighting for suffrage (women"s right to vote), recog as women as persons, rights to education and entry into professions, decide her own for marriage, parenting and property rights, and sometimes the temperance mvmt. Focused mainly on suffrage and overturning legal obstacles to gender equality. Wider range of issues: family, workplace, schools, politics and sports, but only to a point. Major issues incl rape (esp marital rape), changes in custody (children were thought to belong to men) and divorce laws, and equal pay for work of equal value.
