THE NOT RAPE EPIDEMIC - Rape: The unlawful compelling of a person through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse; - any act of sexual intercourse that is forced upon a person “My friends and I know tons about rape... We even learned ways to combat date rape” (112) - aware while walking - hold keys as possible weapon - don’t walk alone - napkin over your drink “Not-rape was all those other little things we experienced every day and struggled to deal with” (112) - statutory rape ) not old enough for consent (16) - being approached by older men - women who appear to be physically older than they actually are not rape: they don’t fit the definition of rape although they’re traumatic - pressured - find a trusted family friend in bed next to you - being groped - being 12 and having a boyfriend who was 24 - puts them in fear regardless of class or ethnicity Many women had their own kind of story in a courtroom setting a women’s past is put on trial - dress, intoxication level, GPA, used to excuse despicable acts “The onus is always on us to keep ourselves safe- even in impossible circumstances” (118-119) - need to take a lead on telling the criminal justice system that rape apologists and enablers will not be tolerated - rape is not about sex, it’s about power - MYTH men only rape other men if they’re gay - if it’s about power then they would feel more powerful raping another man - men are taught to not admit to being vulnerable - most victims know their attackers - 80-90% of rapes are unreported - 1/3 of all women will be raped at some point in their lives - 1 in 10 rape victims are male - sexually motivated crime - assumed men ar
