AR105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Tiberius Gracchus, Gaius Gracchus, The Roman Revolution
Document Summary
The rich became richer, poor became poorer. All of the poor people would move into rome especially after they lost their farm land if they were farmers. Bc: gaius brought about judicial and military reform equipping soldiers free of charge, both tiberius and gaius tried, unsuccessfully, to procure citizenship for the italian allies, gaius forced to commit suicide. Very important for all nobles to preserve their dignitas (prestige) and their auctoritas (authority) Some were genuinely interested in the people, but most wanted the reform to be a means of the end, and to attain power. Gracchi brothers were good examples of this. The goals were generally the same, but their methodology differed. Populares went beyond rome but the whole rome empire, and they realized the way to power was through military control. Gaius marius was a leader of the populares (157 86 bc) This mimicked the earlier unrest from the 5th to 3rd.
