Augustus is the most important of the emperors. Res gestae: the achievements of the divine augustus. Had relied on the triumviral power from 43 33 bc. Had been consul in 33, 31, and 30 bc. Aim was to restore the republican constitution without giving up so much power that he would undo hard work becoming sole ruler at rome and risk more civil wars. Jan 28 bc: when octavian and agrippa became consuls both had 12 lictors to show there were again two chief men with equal power: granted power of censors.
