Document Summary
The domesday book - survey of england commissioned by william the conqueror. The desire to create knowledge about everything in england in a certain time period, certain location (the land of this person, the land of that person) The intent was a comprehensive tax register. Would record landholdings, livestock, belongings of individuals. Goal was to mobilize technology to create a larger record than original book that was more accessible. Country was divided into 24, 000 blocks measuring 4 km e/w and 3 km n/s. Goal was three photographs per 12 km blocks and 20-40 pages of text for each block. Primary question - how to record and disseminate this data based on technology of the documenting life in 1986 day. Answer - a laser disc; very expensive, a giant cd. The domesday information recorded on two laser discs that could read using a bbc master computer with a special interface. The entire system was made commercially available.
