Document Summary

Jason as a hero : a very odd hero, he is even more ambiguous than theseus and very much a loser. The most equivocal hero, easily read in many different ways and the most pathetic hero by far. He is continually helped by others (medea, athena, hera etc. ,), doing almost nothing himself, and going quickly downhill by the end of his life. Text emphasizes that he was heroic at the beginning, but tragically falls afterwards however, this is stretching things a bit. Apollonius rhodius: wrote the argonautica in mid 3rd century bc, hellenistic period. Even in this full account jason does not come across as much of a hero. Most of his great deeds were accomplished by sheer dumb luck. He took the throne away from aeson, jason"s father and wished to kill jason as he was the rightful heir to the throne. This forced jason to leave iolchis when he was very young.
