There"s many ways to interpret entertainment: we have a different view on what is entertaining and so did the romans. In the eastern provinces amphitheatres appear mainly in 3 contexts: capital cities (eg. gortyn, paphos, antioch, roman colonies (eg. corinth, knossos, pisidian antioch, cities with a strong roman presence (eg. pergamon, durres, salamis, ceasarea) Thus amphitheatres (and gladiatorial games) seem to have connections to rome and italy, even in the eastern provinces. Does the lack of amphitheatres at sites like athens mean gladiatorial games were absent: no, these activities were taking place but they just repurposed already available structures (theatre of dionysus in athens)
