Document Summary

Has a set of unique chemical and physical properties. Polarity: it is a polar molecule and an excellent solvent. Polar: uneven distribution of charge (water molecules don"t carry a charge but the atoms that make up the water molecule are such that there is an uneven distribution which makes up the molecule) One oxygen, two hydrogen which associate with the oxygen"s (takes a bent shape) at an angle of 104. 5. Oxygen atoms are very electronegative ( electrons are not evenly shared, they are generally closer to the hydrogen meaning the hydrogen has a partial negative charge and when you take away they have a partial positive charge) Water molecules can easily associate with each other using hydrogen bonds (hydrogen bonds are not strong bonds they are electrostatic and not covalent. About 1/10th the strength of a covalent bond) Hydrogen bonds are also important in dna and proteins. Polarity of water molecules which make it a good solvent.
