Document Summary

Subcortical (subconscious) brain structures: mesolimbic dopaminergic system. Cortical (conscious) areas of the brain: frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital cortices. Bottom-up: data-based, based on incoming stimuli in the environment. Top-down: knowledge based, based o(cid:374) per(cid:272)ei(cid:448)er"s pre(cid:448)ious k(cid:374)o(cid:449)ledge. Perceptual process (be able to draw & label for midterm) Stimulus: all objects in the environemtn are available to observer, observer selectively attends to objects, stimulus impinges upon receptors an internal representation. Electicity: transduction occurs which changes environmental energy nerve impulses, transmission occurs when signals from the receptors travel to the brain, processing occurs during interactions among neurons in the brain. Experience & action: perception occurs as a conscious experience, recognition occurs when an object is placed in a cateogy giving it meaning, action when the perceiver initiates a motor activity in response to recognition. Hypotheses prediction about the state of the world: null hypothesis (ho) (cid:374)o effe(cid:272)t that (cid:449)as(cid:374)"t due to ra(cid:374)do(cid:373) (cid:272)ha(cid:374)(cid:272)e, experimental hypothesis (h1) aka alternative hypothesis.
