Document Summary

Species: individuals that can exchange genetic material through interbreeding (capable of sharing alleles) Gene pool: all the alleles present in all individuals in the species. Populations: interbreeding groups of organisms of the same species living in the same geographical area. What factors determine that amount of variation in a population and species. Somatic mutations: occurs in the body tissue e ects only that one person. Germline: occurs in the reproductive system gets passed on to the next generation. Appears in every cell of the individual. Recombination: combines the new mutations and spreads them through mitosis. Based on the e ects on the organism: neutral: little or no e ect on organism, deleterious: have harmful e ects on the organism, advantageous: improve their carriers changes of survival or reproduction. Silent mutation codon changes to form the same amino acid. Frameshift mutation reading frame o by one amino acid is altered.
