BI111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Indeterminate Growth, Herbivore, Bark
Document Summary
Shoot system above ground: photosyntheic leaves, stems. Plant bodies are dendriic (spreading and branched in form) Vegetaive (non-reproducive) shoot: stem with atached leaves and buds, bud gives rise to extension of shoot or new, branching shoot. Reproducive shoot: produces lowers which later develop fruits containing seeds. Organ/tissue system: body structure that contains two (or more) types of issues and have a deinite form and funcion. Tissue: group of one (or more) types of cells and intercellular substances that funcion together in one (or more) specialized tasks. Primary cell wall (surrounding plasma membrane and cell contents: cellulose ibres in matrix of hemicellulose, ridged but lexible. Large vacuole (30-80% of internal volume) tonoplast membrane: used for storage and to maintain turgor pressure against the cell wall. Cellulose is a branched polymer made of 7000 to 15000 glucose molecules per polymer (most abundant organic substance on earth) Hemicellulose is a branching polymer consising of chains of 500 to 3000 sugar units.
