Here in southern ontario, and indeed in much of eastern north america, much of the original vegetation has been cleared. Old growth forest was a source of valuable timber, and once the trees had been harvested, the land was available for agriculture. However, the era when the economy of ontario was based on the 100-acre family farm has passed. For a variety of reasons, agricultural lands in various parts of the northeastern parts of. Of course, a good deal of this land has been overtaken by urban development. However, there are many instances we can see former fields returning to a forested state. The story of the process is one of secondary succession. Pioneering herbaceous plant species are the first to appear. Over time, different species plants become established, and at some point, the first tree seedlings appear. Some live and prosper, developing into full- grown and mature trees, while others die.
