Document Summary
Feb 10th lecture 16 arthropoda i- bi256 animals chapter 19. Zika is primary transferred to people through a bite of an infected aedes species mosquito (a. aegypti and a. albopictus). Same mosquitos that spread dengue and chikungunya viruses. These mosquitoes typically lay eggs in and near standing water in things like buckets, bowls, animal dishes, flower pots and vases. They prefer to bit people, and live indoors and outdoors near people. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on a person already infected with the virus. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to other people through the bites. Others: yellow fever, west nile, malaria. One of the most species diverse phylum of animals; contains over of all known species. 1,100,000 species of arthropods have been recorded to date. Rich fossil history dating to late precambrian period. Sizes range from the giant japanese crab (four meters in leg span) to the small 0. 1mm long follicle mite.
