Most widely used psychoactive drug in world. 7-9 cups of coffee (1 gram) causes anxiety, headaches, dizziness, insomnia, etc. 90% of americans consume caffeine in one form or another every single day. More than half of all american adults consume more than 300 milligrams of caffeine every day. Native to ethiopia, grown originally in n. africa. Use became popular as a part of arabian social and political structure. By 1500s, cultivation and use became widespread. Venetian traders brought coffee to europe in 1615. Dutch moved plants to java, ceylon (sri lanka) Coffee rust devastated plantations in ceylon in 1850s, caused british to switch to drinking tea stimulating beverages. Today, brazil is the top producer of coffee. Low heat gives light roast and high heat gives dark roast. There are 20 species in the genus coffea (rubiaceae family) Coffea arabica is the original coffee, native to the highlands of ethiopia.
