BF199 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Frantz Fanon, Algerian War, Bourgeoisie
Document Summary
A world divided: the colonial world is cut into two zones that are opposed with no higher unity. Real equality requires radical asymmetry: in a situation of inequality, universality cannot mean the equal right to do what you want with what you have. It must mean forced redistribution of wealth and power in order to create equality. Fanon points out that those with wealth and power always fight this tooth and nail, while accusing the other of being greedy, violent, irrational, and despotic. 2: in a situation of inequality, compromise does not mean equality. The people with wealth and power may come down a little to help the poor get a bit better, but they will not actually become completely equal. Compromise with who: the native knows he is not an animal, but he sees very clearly that the settlers are animals: they are ready and willing to treat human beings as worthless animals.
