Capturing and holding an audience"s attention and motivating readers and listeners require shaping your message to meet the audience"s interests and needs. First few words are the key attractions to the reader. Successful messages anticipate and meet audience"s needs. If you meet their needs they will do ideally what you ask them to do. Who is my audience five kinds of audience. Initial is the first to receive the message. Primary decides whether to accept or act on the message. Secondary comments on the message or implements recommendation. Gatekeeper has the power to stop the message. Watchdog has the power may base actions on the message. Important because different audience is used in different ways. Psychological (talking to yourself when someone is talking to you) Sender ideas messages encodes transmission signals recipient decodes receiver meaning. It people, upper people and front end, if it impacts them.
