(not in the textbook) The purpose of business is whatever people decide it is (social constructionist perspective) What is the social constructionist perspective? (not in the textbook) 3 types of goals: official, operative and informal. Official: called the mission statement. (6 characteristics below) Operative: what they are: actual goals, specific, measurable outcomes, quantigy the official goals ideally for every subsystem of the organization. (pg. 57-60) smart goals goal setting theory: provides lots of evidence that goals affect motivation and performance. Informal: comes from the culture of the organization. Informal what are informal goals? (not in the textbook) Organization culture is the underlying beliefs, surface and norms that guides our behavior. We can analyze the symbols, rituals, stories and language to figure out an organization"s culture. Strength = degree of agreement on values.
