A prolific writer who"s three books the division of labour in society, the rules of the sociological method and suicide are considered important works in the development of sociological theory. Argued that society was moving from an agriculturally based society which he termed the mechanical form to the more complex organic form. The first of these was associated with the rural conditions of society that had predominated in european life for generations (france and england) The majority of people lived in the same small community. Farm work was very labour intensive, requiring the separation of sexes and long days of manual work. People of community shared similar beliefs and values, there was consensus about social order and conduct shared by inhabitants. City life was radically different, people of different beliefs and norms in urban centres. Cheap housing and no collective agreement on how to live, had a number of different services and people depended on them.
