CC100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Operant Conditioning, White-Collar Crime, Differential Association
Document Summary
Basic premises of social process theories: criminality is a function of socialization, everyone has the potential to be criminal. However, not everyone turns to crime: we need to examine the agents of socialization. Parenting style is important: tension in home, lacking in attention, warmth, affection, inconsistent and/ or authoritarian discipline. Single parenthood: increases economic stress, reduced attention. Parental issues: mental health problems, substance abuse, criminality. Child abuse and neglect: the cycle of violence. Failing in school: offend more frequently, commit more serious and violent offences, persist in their offending into adulthood. Kids who feel unsafe/ are bullied: become aggressors. Acceptance and popularity: age 8 to 14, seek a stable peer group, teens gain emotional support from peers, unpopular kids more aggressive and antisocial. Religious beliefs and values: less important than participation. Religious participation: religion is a traditional form of social control, decreases drug use and crime. Participation in other organized activities (e. g. , sports) also insulates against deviance.
