Rule of law: requirement that governments, as well as individuals, be subjected to and abide by the law-came from england law, written so it applies to everyone. Accountability- responsible for your actions- under the law. Public and clear- laws are clear, stable, applied evenly. All components of the criminal justice system must conform to the charter. Provides protection for individual and ensures fairness during legal proceedings. An act or omission that is prohibited by criminal law such as selling drugs act = assault and robbery. Omission = failing to report child abuse and failing to provide the necessities of life. No one should be tried twice for the same crime. Social control so people don"t take law into their own hands. Specific deterrence- you do something so i"m going to punish you so you don"t do it again.
