CC211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Broken Windows Theory, Crime Prevention
Document Summary
Out casting and shaming solves nothing, it"ll only get worst. Reintegrative shaming prevents crime: keeping a social bond with society. Confrontational meetings: people don"t like conflict, lack of expectation, not knowing what to expect, leading for them to leave their comfort zone. Notion of deterrence in a positive way: deters someone from re-offending. Reinforce community values: what"s right and wrong. Shame means more when coming from the offender: an apology is powerful, sentencing circles when sitting in the circle you are able to see everyone and all the emotions. The goal is to accept the offender back into the community. Disapproval of crime, and not the person. Shame the act committed, and allow the re-entry of the person back into society. Shame becomes more effective in the court process. Crime prevention is changing our way of how we approach crime. Changing the process dealing with the offending: looking at why someone committed the crime.
