CT227 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Filial Piety, Old Age, Terror Management Theory
Document Summary
We see old age as a problem rather than a process to look forward to. Elders are seen generally more negatively in this culture due to our fear of mortality: there is a culture in asia called filial piety, where the elderly have important roles within a family. The communities and the younger generation are missing older generation to guide us with their experience and wisdom. Used to categorize people and make sense of the social world. When these stereotypes (cognitive processes) are negative they can have devastating results due to prejudice and discrimination: where prejudice and discrimination come into different forms. Ex, race, gender, and age in this case. Prototype: imagined individual who embodies the group being stereotyped. Within-group assimilation - two people who are 80 years of age. Between-group contrast - one 80 year old is an older statesman, the other is in a nursing home.
