The people rise up to resist the coup and it is defeated
In response Turkey's President Erdogan declares "state of emergency" and has
thousands arrested (within 24 hrs), tens of thousands civil servants dismissed, and
suspends civil rights (ex, international travel, freedom of speech) within days of coup

In May 2016, Philippines elects a hardline President Rody "the Punisher" Duterte
Former mayor of the large city Davao, his tough on crime policies (and suspected ties to
anti-drug death squads) saw crime rates drop in his city
He campaigned on an anticrime platform, saying that drug dealers will be routinely
killed and fed to the fishes
His campaign was controversial, peppered with misogynistic and homophobic slurs
Since taking office, 2500 people have been killed - many in street executions - 10,000
arrested and 600,000 self0surrendered
Not all killed have been dealers, but many users. When criticized by UN, Duterte
responds by asking whether drug users are really human at all

When unable to serve three terms as president, Putin has himself appointed PM a
second time and manipulates law to stand again for a third term
In effort to make Russian government more "Russian", Putin has enacted numerous
political policies that give the president more power over politicians by appointing
governors (rather than voting) and more power of economy
