Pre-linguistic period is when humans find sensitivity to speech. Initial vocalizations similar across languages, all languages sound the same until about 6 months. Holophrastic period; happens after first word, one word conveys one meaning, at beginning they learn 10 words in a month because of immature muscles, motor movements with tongue. Naming explosion at 18 to 24 months where they can learn 10w/ a week due to fast mapping(inferences). Common errors is overextension (use car as meaning for all motor vehicles), broad term to something specific(candy)
