Clothing: humans cover their bodies with natural and man-made fabrics and materials, clothing includes coverings for the torso and limbs as well as covering hands, feet, and head. Clothing as language: has the ability to transmit social or cultural messages about the self and others. To gain acknowledgment from others and benefit us as a result. Conservation & difference : clothing is particularly suited to expressing either social commonality or social difference, *key point: material culture, of which is a part, is more conservative than language. I. e. antiques in an elder"s home-signifies connection to the past, and physically connect us to other people in time and place. Have a patina-change in their look- lets us know it is from the past. Presents our identity just by looking at it. It maintains a sense of familiarity and easily signals strangeness or difference.
