CS235 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Social Theory, Antipositivism, Internal Consistency
Document Summary
Producing quality research, things to think about when designing your own research: Positionality and reflexivity: three p"s, causality. Precision- accuracy when defining and measuring concept and variables: operational definitions. Parsimony- succinct and inclusive models and explanations. Causation- when a variable causes the variation in the other. Conditions must be both necessary and sufficient to cause the effect: understanding causation. Correlation/covariation- when variables vary in relation to another. Spurious- when the relationship between two variables is in fact caused by some other factor: e. g. gender-income, independent variable (gender, dependent variable (income, intervening variables (education level, parent"s income, discrimination, reliability and validity. Reliability- the extent to which a study, test, or any measuring procedure yields the same result on repeated trials. Validity-the degree to which a study accurately reflects or assesses the specific concept(s) that the researcher is attempting to measure: validity. Validity of arguments validity of concepts validity of measurements validity of designs validity of sampling: types of validity.
