Inductive view of relationship between theory and research: theories and research emerge from the data. Diversity of approaches: qualitative research methods. Ethnography/participant observation: prolonged immersion in the field. Visual analysis: main steps in qualitative research. Interpretation of data: collection of more data, tighter specification of the research question(s) External reliability: degree to which a study can be replicated. Internal reliability: when there is more than one observer, members of the research team agree about what they see and hear, validity. External validity: concern with whether meaning can be generalized beyond the specific research context in which they are generated. Internal validity: concern with the sound-ness of making a causal relationship between two or more variables, main preoccupations of qualitative researchers. Seeing through the eyes of those studied. 2: taking the role of the other/intercultural sensitivity and communication, understanding the meanings people attribute to their world, unexpected findings.
