○ Took root with govts worried about decline of national manufacturing industries →

What’s at stake? Why care?
● Economization: valuing creativity primarily for its economic contribution
○ commodification of culture is taken for granted, creativity has intrinsic value
● Utopianization: romancing creative labour while neglecting precarity
○ discourse on creative economy has celebratory view of creative class work life,
but we must understand what this work involves → precarity is downplayed
● Gentrification: creative class plays role in revitalizing neighbourhoods they enter, but this
process can raise rent and property value exiling people who were there before
