The App Economy
● Ben Goldsmith in our reading says it was in 1985 when the term app was first used for
the term software application - apple had programming tool mac app
● But only really begins with opening of apples app store in 2008
● Apps now key portal to internet - ‘mobile internet’
● Apps have 2fold connection to creative industries - apps considered to be a sector of the
creative industries, and apps provide the platform thru which the content produced by
range of creative industries is accessed
● Goldsmith def of app economy:
○ ‘ a collection of interlocking innovative ecosystems. Each ecosystem consists of
a core company, which creates and maintains a platform and an app
marketplace, plus small and large companies that produce apps and/or mobile
devices for that platform.”
○ ‘The smartphone app economy extends much further than app store volumes,
downloads, and revenues alone to encompass not only platform owner, app
store operators and developers, but all those who invest in, design, develop, test,
distribute, support, monetize, market, analyze, use, or profit from software on
mobile computing devices.”
● Apps celebrated for contribution to economic growth
● US 143 billion = overall app economy’s projected value in 2016
● Ontario’s mobile app enterprises currently generate 618 mill → rapidly expanding
economy
● Spread unevenly across province → most app based econ activity is in Toronto
